What currency is used?
The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar but the US Dollar is widely accepted
How much is the departure tax ?
US$20 or EC$50
When is the hurricane season?
The hurricane season is June to September. You might experience tropical storms or hurricanes during these months. The island is very well prepared for hurricanes and is well known as a safe haven for boats as its craggy shoreline provides excellent protection
Do I need vaccinations?
There are no vaccinations required for visiting Antigua and Barbuda
What is the electrical voltage on the island?
220/110 volts. American type 2-pin sockets are prevalent so an adapter might be required
Do I have to tip?
Yes, usually 10-15% depending on the service. Some restaurant include a 10% service charge in the bill. If in doubt, just ask. Taxi drivers are usually tipped 10% of the fare.
What can I wear?
Informal. Light cotton shirts and clothes are recommended. Nothing too tight! Bikinis and shirtless board short wearers are not really appropriate in towns, shops and restaurants.
What about banks?
There are many banks, open from 8-1pm and 3-5pm Mon-Thus. On Friday they are open 8-12pm and 3-5pm.
What if a cricket ball breaks my little finger?
There are several general practitioners and specialists on the island and also a hospital and private clinic. Chemists are widely available. Recompression chambers are available for divers.
Can I wear khaki?
No! The importation and wearing of camouflage clothing is prohibited on Antigua and Barbuda.
Is it safe?
The islands are virtually crime free but exercise normal precautions and common sense.
